The (Prophetic) Road to the Australian Open

It's been quiet for tennis fans enduring the off-season, but on January 1 the fervor starts again!  The Australian tennis season kicks off in Brisbane on January 1, a tournament that includes our favorite tennis players: both men and women.

Do you recall what happened at Brisbane last year?

Last year at Bisbane an unseeded Petra Kvitova defeated the, also unseeded, Andrea Petkovic. This was only Kvitova’s 2nd WTA title.    After winning the first tournament of the year, she would go on to win her first Grand Slam at Wimbledon and close the year by winning the WTA year-end championships (and winning a few titles in between).

How about Sydney, WTA’s premier tune-up for Australian Open?

Na Li upset Kim Clijsters. Na Li then went on to make her first Grand Slam final at the Australian Open and then to win her first Grand Slam at Roland Garros.

What's at stake in WTA Beijing Final

Petkovic (9th seed) and Radwanska (11th seed) will fight to win the trophy at the China Open on Sunday, October 9.  Winning at this Premier tournament will help their chances of making the year end Championships. 3 of 8 spots for the WTA Championships are open.  This winner of this tournament will also break into the top 10 and take a step closer to taking a post at Istanbul.  The tournament starts on Octoer 25, so the countdown is on.  Read more about the race to Istanbul here.
